There are two mysterious roads on Jeju.
The more popular one is closer to Jeju city (I named it here Mysterious Road Number 1). Almost all of the foreign tour groups will come here. The big coaches would turn off their engines at the sign which marks the beginning of the mysterious road and let the coach slide “up” the slope by itself. You should start your mysterious journey at the sign closer to the hill and you would see your car “going up hill” without you stepping on the gas. This is an illusion caused by the trees along the road which make you feel like you’re going uphill while you’re actually going downhill.
If you don’t have a car, you can also try this illusion out using the bottles placed outside the stores along the mysterious road.
The other mysterious road (Mysterious Road Number 2) is closer to Hallasan on the 1117 route. There are only a couple of stores here and only small local tours would come here. I personally think it is more difficult to see the illusion here in this mysterious road than Number 1.
One of the three big waterfalls in Jeju. Located in near Seogwipo city 西歸浦市 서귀포시. It name literally means the sky connecting with the land. It rained a lot before we got there, so the water was a bit muddy…
Near the entrance of the waterfall park, there are a lot of Jeju stone statues 石爺爺 돌 하르방.
This is one of the three big waterfalls in Jeju. Located on the Southern shore of Jeju, this waterfall very close to the sea. According to the legend, in the Qin dynasty Qin Shi Huang 秦始皇 sent Xu Fu 徐福 to find in elixir of life 長生不老藥. In his quest, he visited Jeju and by passed this waterfall. He actually wrote 서불과차 徐市過此 on a piece of stone next to the waterfall. But we didn’t see it cus we rushed away as the waterfall stank for some reason.
The Eastern tip of Jeju Island. Its beautiful landscape has made it the filming location for a number of dramas. There is a church on the hill which is a memorial house for the drama “All-in” 올인 (which we skipped cus we are not a big fan of this drama). Close to the lighthouse, there is an architectural work, Genius Loci, by a famous Japanese architect, Tadao Ando (which we also skipped cus of our schedule).
Next to Genious Loci, there is a restaurant with surrounding seaview: Glass House 글라스하우스, which appear in a number of drama such as Boys Over Flowers 花樣男子 꽃보다 남자.
At the back of the Glass House, the path leads to a seashore where you can see a group of sea maiden 海女 해녀 diving with Seongsan Ilchulbong 城山日出峰 성산 일출봉 and Udo Island 牛島 우도 as the background.
A beach South of Seongsan Ilchulbong 城山日出峰 성산 일출봉. It has a nice side view of the crater, and it should be a very nice spot for taking sunrise photos of the crater.
Udo 牛島 우도 is an outlying island off the East coast of Jeju Island. With a few beaches, lighthouses, local fishing villages, and a lot of “sea maiden” 海女 해녀 (Middle age women who dive, without any scuba diving gear, for a living. They gather abalone, clams, seaweed, etc from the sea).
There is a ferry from Seongsan Port 城山港 성산항 to Udo (Cheonjinhang Port 천진항 or Haumokdonghang Port 하우목동항). We got off at Haumokdonghang Port and rented bikes to cycle round the island. There are also scooters for rent at the store. 3 hours would be more than enough for going around the island along the coast including time for resting and photo. We also hiked up to the Udobong Peak 牛島峰 우도봉정상 (just ~130m) where there is a lighthouse and a museum. It was really foggy the day we went to Udo, but it was still very beautiful.
Most of the stores and restaurants gathered around Cheonjinhang Port 천진항. There are a few restaurants at Geommeollae Beach 검멀레 해수욕장.
The ferry ride was about 15 mins from Seongsan Port Haumokdonghang Port. Ferry fare 2000 won. Udo admission fee 1000 won. Ferry departs hourly from Seongsan Port from 8am.
There is also a Olle trail (#1-1. 16.1km 4-5hours) on Udo, which is basically the route we biked.
This “castle” (as its Korean name suggests) has recently made the UNESCO Word Heritage. It was formed by some kind of hydrovolcanic activity 5000 years ago.
Located at the most Eastern part of Jeju, some say it is the perfect place to see sunrise. But we just didn’t have the chance to see the whole crater, let alone a sunrise since it was foggy and rainy the whole time we were there (we stayed there for 2 nights).
The walk up to the view point could be quite tiring. So please wear some comfortable shoes…
You can get a nice view of the town, Seongsan 城山 성산, as you’re reaching the peak.
Entrance Fee: 2000 won per adult
There are convenient stores, Dunkin Donut, Lotteria and other Korean restaurants at the entrance.
Oedolgae 獨立岩 외돌개 is piece of tall long rock standing on its own on the coast near Seogwipo city 西歸浦市 서귀포시 . It has become famous since it appears in the TV drama ‘Daejangguem’ 大長今. The nearby coastal line definitely worths a visit even if you haven’t seen the drama.
There is a memorial site of a war and a garden east of the Oedolgae.
If you take the stairs at the back of the memorial you will see this beautiful coast line, which seems like there is a big swimming pool in the sea.
Oedolgae is part of the Jeju Olle trail (it is the end of course #6 and the beginning of course #7)
